Etsy photo size and resolution warnings: what to check in 2026

Fix Etsy photo-size warnings by checking pixels, crops, file formats and upload failures. Separate the 2000-pixel recommendation from first-photo guidance.

An Etsy photo-size warning needs a pixel-dimension check, while an upload that stalls may need a different fix. Start with the original file: Etsy recommends at least 2000 pixels in both dimensions and gives separate first-photo guidance of at least 635 pixels in both dimensions, rather than one threshold that explains every warning.

This guide follows official help pages reviewed on October 21, 2026. Where Etsy's pages differ, the distinction is stated below. It is a troubleshooting workflow, not a promise that resizing changes search placement or fixes every upload.

Which Etsy numbers apply to listing photos?

The dedicated shop image guidance distinguishes recommendations, first-photo search guidance and connection-related upload problems.

Figure or ruleWhat the official page saysHow to use it
2000 pixels or more in width and heightRecommended dimensions for listing photosAim for this in a detailed source and final crop
635 pixels in width and heightFirst photo should meet this to avoid lower search placementTreat it as first-photo guidance, not proof that every smaller file is technically rejected
Named 2000-pixel-wide warningThe listing help calls it a suggestion that should allow continued publishingRead the exact message before diagnosing a hard upload failure
Images larger than 1MBMay fail to finish uploading, especially on a slow connectionTroubleshoot transfer and compression; this is not a universal 1MB cap
TransparencyTransparent PNG is unsupported; transparent areas can appear blackFlatten the image onto the intended background
Listing capacityUp to 20 photos and two videos in current listing helpThis is a slot count, not an image-size requirement

The listing creation article is the source for the named warning and current slot count. Its warning refers to width, while the dedicated image page recommends both dimensions. Do not replace those different statements with an invented rule that all Etsy warnings trigger at one size.

Does the warning mean you cannot publish?

For the specific message about listings looking best with photos at least 2000 pixels wide, Etsy says it is a suggestion and you should be able to continue publishing.

That does not mean every photo error is optional. A file that cannot upload or decode, or a listing with another unresolved issue, needs a different diagnosis. Record the exact wording and whether the photo appears in the editor before changing it.

Use this simple distinction:

  • Photo added, size suggestion shown: inspect dimensions and decide whether you have a better source.
  • Photo never finishes uploading: investigate transfer, file encoding and browser conditions.
  • Photo uploads but looks soft: compare the exported file with the original.
  • Photo is sharp but cropped awkwardly: adjust composition and the thumbnail preview.

These are diagnostic categories, not a claim that Etsy uses those labels internally. Keeping them separate prevents repeated compression of a file whose real problem is a small source or tight crop.

How do you check the actual pixels?

Open the image's file information or an editor that reports width and height in pixels. Check the actual file selected for upload, not only the dimensions of a project canvas or a preview.

A hypothetical 2400-by-1800-pixel image exceeds 2000 pixels in width but does not meet Etsy's recommendation in height. A 1200-by-900-pixel file remains below that recommendation even if its file size is several megabytes.

File size measures stored bytes; pixel dimensions describe the image grid. A detailed JPEG may compress well, while another file can contain more bytes without having more pixels. Increasing the byte size is not a resolution repair.

A picture's displayed width in a browser is also different from the source-file dimensions. Zooming the page or changing a displayed preview does not rewrite the image selected for upload. MDN's image documentation distinguishes an image's natural dimensions from constraints on its rendered size.

For a local check of dimensions, transparency and thumbnail framing, use the marketplace photo checker. Its output describes file facts and practical guidance; it does not certify Etsy approval.

Why do print resolution and upsampling not solve everything?

Changing a print-resolution setting from 72 to 300 pixels per inch without resampling leaves the pixel dimensions unchanged. It does not turn a small listing file into a detailed large one.

Upsampling adds estimated pixels. Adobe's explanation of image size and resampling distinguishes that operation from changing print size without adding pixels. It also warns that upsampling cannot supply detail absent from the source.

For a listing, look for the original camera file before enlarging a screenshot, messaging-app copy or downloaded thumbnail. A larger export can be useful for a required layout, but inspect the product afterward rather than assuming the new dimensions prove quality.

Check text on labels, fabric texture, fine chains and edges. If those details were already blurred, a new capture may be the most accurate fix. Do not describe reconstructed details as a record of the actual item.

Can cropping cause the problem?

Yes. A crop discards part of the source image unless you add or resample pixels. The final crop, not the original camera specification, is what you upload.

For example, a hypothetical 3000-by-2400-pixel source can provide a 2400-pixel square crop without enlarging it. A very tight crop around a small product may leave much less. Check the exported dimensions after cropping.

Keep enough room around the item for Etsy's different previews. Its dedicated guidance recommends checking the thumbnail tool across square, portrait and landscape views. The same page first allows landscape or square for the first image, then advises landscape and avoiding square crops in its thumbnail recommendations. Preview the result rather than treating one shape as a universal rule.

A useful composition leaves the product readable without clipping a handle, sleeve or earring hook. Padding helps framing, but adding a large border does not create more detail within the product.

Use the marketplace image resizer to prepare a chosen export, then check the item at full size and in the listing preview.

Which file types does Etsy currently list?

The dedicated image page currently lists JPG, GIF, PNG, SVG and HEIC. It excludes animated GIF and transparent PNG.

The older image troubleshooting article lists only JPG, GIF and PNG. That is an official-page inconsistency, so it would be inaccurate to claim the reviewed documentation uniformly says HEIC is unsupported.

For a problematic photographic upload, a properly encoded JPEG is a practical compatibility test because both pages list it. Export a new JPEG from an image editor; merely changing a filename's extension does not convert its contents. Use an sRGB color profile, as Etsy's troubleshooting guidance advises.

Do not confuse listing photos with a buyer's uploaded personalization file. Etsy's personalized-listing help describes a separate file-upload field with its own formats and limits. Documentation or beta references for that feature do not establish the rules for your product-photo gallery.

What if the upload stalls rather than showing a size warning?

First save your work and try one known-good photo. That narrows the problem without re-exporting an entire collection.

Etsy's troubleshooting page names connection problems, file encoding, color profile, browser compatibility and upload blocking as possible causes. Test an up-to-date supported browser and a stable connection. If only one file fails, compare its encoding and dimensions with a file that works.

The dedicated page's over-1MB warning and the older article's over-300k warning both discuss possible timeouts on slow connections. Neither should become a universal maximum in a sizing checklist.

Try reducing compressed bytes while preserving adequate pixel dimensions. The target-size compression tool can help prepare that experiment. The compressor re-encodes the image and removes original metadata; use it only when no provider-required or destination-required provenance will be lost. Inspect the result for blocky edges or lost detail before replacing the original.

A successful small test does not prove every larger file is prohibited. It tells you which version transferred under the conditions you tested. Keep the original and note which change affected the result.

Why does a transparent PNG look black?

Etsy explicitly warns that transparent areas can appear black. A checkerboard in an editor usually represents transparency, not a white background already stored in the image.

Flatten the photo onto white or another appropriate solid background before export. Inspect the boundary around pale products, glass and thin details; replacing transparency should not fill genuine product openings or erase edges.

The white background versus transparent PNG guide explains the difference between the deliverables. For Etsy, check the final flattened file rather than relying on how the editor's transparent preview looked.

Do not repeatedly convert and recompress your only copy. Keep a source master and make a separate upload version, so correcting one thumbnail does not degrade all later exports.

What should you send support if the problem persists?

Capture the exact error, the upload route you used and whether the same file works elsewhere in Etsy. Record the filename, format, pixel dimensions and byte size. Include a screenshot that shows the problem without exposing private account information.

Explain what you tried and what changed. “JPEG uploads but the original does not” is more useful than “Etsy hates my photos.” If the issue is a recommendation rather than a blocking error, say that too.

Use the marketplace image and AI rules guide to keep file preparation separate from content requirements. Correct dimensions cannot establish that an image accurately represents an item or satisfies every listing policy.

What to do next

Find the best original, check its dimensions and make one final crop before changing a whole batch. Follow the Etsy product-photo workflow to prepare a clear upload, then review it in Etsy's own listing and thumbnail previews.

Diagnose an Etsy suggestion separately from upload failure.

A listing photo with a size warning or a transfer that does not finish.

  1. Read the message

Determine whether the exact notice is a size suggestion, failed transfer or another listing issue.

  2. Inspect the crop

Measure both dimensions of the final crop rather than relying on bytes or print-resolution settings.

  3. Test one export

Try one compatible export while preserving the original and any provider-required provenance.

Illustrative workflow. Review checkpoint: Upsampling changes pixel count without recording missing product detail.
