eBay photo requirements in 2026: sizes, formats and upload checks
Check eBay US photo sizes, formats and content rules for 2026. Separate the 500px longest-side minimum from upload tips, stock-photo limits and practical fixes.

For US eBay listings, the picture policy requires at least one photo and a minimum of 500 pixels on the longest side; separate uploader tips recommend about 1600 × 1600 pixels. The current US uploader help permits files up to 12MB and up to 24 pictures, while accuracy, ownership, condition and restrictions on added graphics still apply.
Which eBay photo requirements apply in this guide?
This guide covers the US eBay picture policy and US photo-uploader help reviewed on October 21, 2026. It separates published requirements from photo tips and from our own diagnostic workflow. Other eBay country sites or specialist categories may use different guidance.
The US picture policy establishes the longest-side minimum and content restrictions. The US adding-pictures guide describes the uploader, accepted formats and practical photography recommendations.
| Question | Current US source says | How to use that information |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum dimensions | Policy: at least 500 pixels on the longest side | Do not rewrite this as a universal 500 × 500 policy |
| Separate photo tips | Minimum 500 × 500; about 1600 × 1600 recommended | Use the larger target when supported by the source |
| Shape | 1:1 or 16:9 generally look best | Guidance rather than a compulsory square rule |
| File size | Up to 12MB per photo in US uploader help | Check the final file, not the source file |
| Number | At least one; up to 24 pictures | Add useful views rather than duplicates |
| Background | Neutral and uncluttered; white generally best | A dark backdrop may suit reflective products |
| Condition | No stock photos for used, damaged or defective items | Show the actual item’s condition |
A practical export target is not a guarantee of approval. The item, listing type and current category policies still matter.
Is 500 pixels on the longest side the same as 500 × 500?
No. A 500 × 300 image satisfies the policy’s stated longest-side dimension, but it does not meet the separate tips’ 500 × 500 guidance. That example explains the distinction; it is not a promise that a particular uploader will accept that file.
Treat 500 as a minimum-policy reference, not a quality goal. Start from a larger, sharp original so you can produce the recommended export without relying on enlargement. Check labels, surface condition and fine details at a useful viewing size.
If the only source is small or blurred, resizing changes its dimensions without revealing what was never captured. Retake the photograph when important details cannot be inspected. Do not turn a tiny original into a large file and assume the extra pixels prove better product evidence.
The ecommerce image size guide is useful when you are preparing separate exports for several channels. Keep your original master rather than repeatedly editing the previous marketplace-sized copy.
Which formats and file limits should I use?
The current US uploader help lists JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, WebP, HEIC and AVIF. This is a verified list from that US help page, not a statement that every editing application or every regional uploader supports the same files.
JPEG is a practical starting point for ordinary photographs. Use a real export or conversion operation when changing format; renaming a filename extension does not change the underlying image. Open the exported copy before uploading to confirm it is readable and shows the intended photograph.
Check the final file’s size against the US 12MB limit. A high-resolution image may need a different export setting, while an already small file may need no change. Inspect the result for compression damage around lettering, stitching and reflective edges.
Regional search results can be misleading here: some non-US eBay help pages describe different computer-upload and URL-import limits. Use the help for the market and upload route you are actually using rather than combining numbers from several sites.
What should the main photo and additional views show?
Choose a main photo that clearly identifies what is for sale. eBay’s uploader tips say it should show the whole item face-on; for a bundle, show the items included, while a single-item main photo should not imply extra variations are included.
Plan the rest of the gallery around buyer questions. A useful original shot list might include front, back, important sides, labels, scale and condition details. This is our suggested planning method, not a platform requirement to use every available slot.
For an illustrative used-camera listing, a front view identifies the camera, a rear view shows the controls, and close-ups document a scratched screen and the included battery. A photograph containing several lenses would be confusing if only the body is sold.
Give condition details their own clear images. Do not make the buyer infer a crack or repair from a distant main shot. Keep the written description consistent with what those photographs show, including which accessories are included.
Which graphics, borders and watermarks should I remove?
The picture policy prohibits added borders, text, artwork, marketing material and watermarks, including ownership-attribution watermarks. It also prohibits placeholder images used to convey messages and photographs that do not accurately represent the item.
That means a promotional badge is not made acceptable by being visually small. Keep delivery promises, sales messages and other listing information in the appropriate listing fields rather than adding them to the photograph.
Distinguish an overlay from a real detail on the product. The policy is not an instruction to erase a manufacturer’s label, logo or printed design from the actual item. Removing real branding could make the image less accurate.
Before exporting, look for graphics inherited from a previous shop, a supplier sheet or an editing template. Use an original clean photograph where possible instead of covering an existing watermark with another shape. Removing a rights notice does not establish permission to use someone else’s image.
Can I use catalog photos or images from a manufacturer?
The US images, videos and text policy recommends creating your own content and allows use of eBay catalog content. For content created by someone else, its full policy requires explicit written permission from the relevant rights holders.
A publicly accessible manufacturer photograph is not automatically yours to copy. The policy’s FAQ specifically rejects copying images from manufacturer websites or internet searches merely because they are available online.
Keep the condition restriction separate from ownership. Permission to use an image does not override the picture policy’s prohibition on stock photos for used, damaged or defective items. A catalog image of a pristine product cannot document the wear on the particular item you are sending.
For new stock, confirm both that the image is appropriate for the exact variant and that your use is permitted. A photograph of another color, package quantity or accessory set can still be misleading even if you have permission to use it.
Can I change the background or use AI?
eBay’s US uploader help describes solid-white background editing on the website and AI-generated background options in its app. That is concrete evidence of a supported background workflow, not blanket approval to invent or alter the product itself.
Inspect any edited boundary around straps, cables, transparent parts and reflective surfaces. A cleaner setting is not useful if a handle disappears or a damaged corner is repaired by the edit. Keep an unedited original for comparison.
The background-removal quality checklist helps you look for missing edges and other editing problems. These are visual checks, not proof of compliance or a guarantee that an automated system will identify every issue.
The three reviewed US pages do not specify a general AI metadata tag for listing images. That limited finding does not establish that no other applicable obligation exists. Preserve any provenance required by the source provider and check the marketplace image and AI rules guide before reusing an asset elsewhere.
How should I diagnose a failed upload or policy warning?
Start by identifying which problem you actually have. An unreadable file, a file-size problem, an unsuitable main image and a rights complaint call for different corrections. Re-exporting the same image repeatedly will not resolve all of them.
Use this original diagnostic sequence:
- Save the exact error or policy message and identify the affected image.
- Open the final upload file locally and confirm that it is the intended item.
- Check its format, dimensions and file size against the current US help.
- Inspect the whole frame for cropped product parts and added graphics.
- Compare condition, color, included quantity and accessories with the listing.
- Check the image’s source and permission records.
- Correct the identified issue, then inspect the revised listing preview.
The marketplace photo checker can help inspect dimensions, transparency and thumbnail crops. It does not establish ownership, verify the delivered item or guarantee eBay approval.
The picture policy says eBay may remove content, warn a seller or restrict an account for violations. Follow the specific notice and current Seller Help guidance. No editing tool or appeal wording can promise that a listing will be restored.
What to do next
Prepare one accurate main image and the detail photographs needed to explain the item’s condition, then check the exported files and listing preview. The eBay product photos workflow can help organize that preparation while you retain responsibility for the actual item and its policies.
Separate eBay policy bounds from uploader tips.
