For TikTok Shop US, product listing images must be square and at least 600 × 600 pixels, with the main image showing the physical product from the front on pure white. The current policies conditionally allow accurate AI-assisted images, but still prohibit misleading product depictions, placeholders and digital product renderings.

Which TikTok Shop rules does this guide cover?

This guide covers the United States Seller Center sources reviewed on October 21, 2026. Rules from another TikTok Shop market, an API specification or a general creator page should not silently replace the US product listing policy.

The most important source is the US Product Listing Policy, dated September 1, 2026. It sets requirements for what appears in listing photographs. Separate upload guides describe how to submit files. A file passing the uploader does not establish that its subject, background or claims meet policy.

For example, an uploader might accept a rectangular image even though the listing policy calls for square images. Similarly, a small file may upload successfully while showing the wrong quantity or a synthetic version of the product. Check technical acceptance and product accuracy as separate steps.

Use the marketplace image and AI rules guide to compare destinations, but open the applicable official policy when preparing a listing. Category requirements can add constraints beyond this general summary.

What size, format and image count should you use?

The current US listing policy requires at least 600 × 600 pixels and permits up to nine square images, with one selected as the main image. The direct Add Products guide, dated July 24, 2026, lists JPG, JPEG and PNG and requires at least one image.

CheckCurrent US source wordingPractical interpretation
Listing shapeSquare imagesPrepare a 1:1 canvas for the listing set
Pixel dimensionsAt least 600 × 600This is a minimum, not a promise that fine details will be readable
Listing countUp to nine, one mainGive each image a different useful job
Direct listing formatsJPG, JPEG, PNGExport a supported copy rather than changing a filename extension
Direct listing file sizeMaximum 10MB in Add Products guideApply this to that upload route
Media Center file sizeMaximum 5MB in its older guideCheck this route's feedback rather than assuming the direct limit applies

Pixel dimensions and file size answer different questions. A highly compressed image can meet a byte limit while making a label unreadable. A large file can still be out of focus. Inspect the exported image before assuming that passing the size checks makes it useful.

Do not enlarge a tiny source just to produce a larger pixel count and assume you have restored detail. Start with a sharp original and leave room to crop without cutting away the product. Our ecommerce image size guide explains the distinction between source dimensions and export size.

Why do official guides say both 10MB and 5MB?

The direct Add Products guide says a maximum of 10MB per image. The US Product Media Center guide, dated July 17, 2024, says JPG, PNG or JPEG images have a maximum of 5MB.

These are different documented upload routes, and the Media Center article is older. The evidence does not support rewriting them into one universal TikTok Shop image cap. If you use Media Center to store and reuse assets, follow its current interface feedback and the guide that applies to it. If the interface and article disagree, keep the message and check Seller Center support rather than repeatedly exporting to an assumed limit.

The Media Center guide also mentions images larger than 300 × 300. That storage threshold does not supersede the listing policy's 600 × 600 minimum. A file can enter a media library without being ready for a compliant listing.

There is another easy source of confusion: the listing policy's 5MB sentence concerns a listing video. It is not that page's maximum image size. Keep image and video specifications separate when building an export preset.

Does the main image really need a pure white background?

Yes. The US listing policy specifically requires pure white behind the main product image and a front physical view of the product. It also calls for an objective, straightforward representation of what is for sale. Weaker recommendations about neutral backgrounds from other sources do not replace that wording.

Start with the item you will deliver, framed so its overall shape is visible. Keep handles, straps and protruding parts inside the image. If you remove the background, inspect the boundary closely: lace, translucent plastic, glass, loose fibers and pale edges can disappear or acquire a halo.

The background removal quality checklist helps you check those edges against the original. White background replacement should not turn transparent material opaque, fill an opening, remove a real product feature or invent a reflection.

The policy prohibits added logos, text, borders, watermarks and graphics covering the product or appearing in the background across product images. This concerns added overlays; do not interpret it as a request to erase a genuine brand mark printed on the actual item. Keep product identity and attributes accurate.

For the main image, avoid staging that makes separate props look included. If the buyer receives one bottle, do not create an arrangement that implies a multipack. A white canvas cannot make an inaccurate bundle photograph compliant.

What should the remaining images show?

The listing policy permits front, back, sides and details, including key features, usage scenarios, variations, styled scenes, close-ups and size comparisons. It also prohibits repeated images showing the same angle. Plan complementary information rather than using every slot for a slightly different crop of the front.

For a bag, a useful editorial shot plan might include its back, open interior, closure, strap attachment and a truthful scale view. This is an example, not a mandated image sequence. Photograph the actual lining and hardware instead of asking a generator to fill in parts you have not recorded.

Check every SKU. A blue bag image should not stand in for a green variation, and a larger version should not inherit a smaller product's scale scene. Compare images with the selected variation, title, attributes and package contents.

Category restrictions matter. The current policy specifically requires children's swimwear and undergarments to be displayed flat, without child models or mannequins. Do not generalize another category's allowed presentation into permission for those products. Follow the current category-specific requirements before arranging a shoot.

Are AI product images allowed on TikTok Shop?

The September 24, 2026 AI requirements for product listing images say AIGC is allowed when it accurately represents the real product. They prohibit changes that misrepresent specifications, quantity, bundle contents, scale, compatibility or performance.

That page also points sellers back to the listing policy, which prohibits placeholders and digital product renderings. Read the documents together. Conditional AIGC permission does not establish that every generated main image is acceptable or that an accurate-looking rendering automatically qualifies as a physical-product photograph.

A conservative workflow is to retain a real-product main image and use any AI assistance only after checking both accuracy and the applicable presentation rules. Background cleanup is a different operation from redrawing the product, but neither should be assumed to receive automatic approval.

The AI listing guidance gives concrete warnings about flat products: a print, sticker or thin decorative item must not be made to look embossed, carved, thick or three-dimensional unless that is the actual sold product. Similarly, a generated room scene must not make a small item appear much larger than its stated dimensions.

CatalogCut publishes this guide and offers AI photography, so it has a commercial interest. Its Stage workflow distinguishes Preserve, which places the existing photographed product into a new scene, from Creative, which redraws it. On-model Creative results can change details. Automated comparison and refunds for failed quality checks do not guarantee TikTok Shop acceptance or perfect fidelity.

Is an AI label in a promotional post the same as a gallery requirement?

No. TikTok Shop's September 2, 2026 general AIGC requirements discuss creators, promotional content and disclosure for fully generated or significantly AI-edited content. They describe disclosure within the content or through the posting screen's AI-generated content setting.

Those posting instructions are not evidence of an equivalent disclosure toggle inside a product-image gallery. Do not add an AI watermark across a gallery photo as a universal workaround: the listing policy separately prohibits added watermarks and text. Labeling also does not repair inaccurate product representation.

The reviewed listing sources do not prescribe a particular XMP or IPTC field for product-gallery photos. That is a limited finding about these pages, not proof that every other applicable requirement is absent. Preserve any provenance information required by your image provider or destination during editing.

Treat promotional posts and listing assets as related but distinct deliverables. A product gallery needs to meet its listing rules; a promotional AI post needs to meet its content and disclosure rules as well.

What should you check before submitting?

Review the actual export and the listing preview, not just the editor canvas:

  • Does the main image show the correct physical item from the front on pure white?
  • Are the files square, supported and at least 600 × 600?
  • Does each image add a different useful view?
  • Do color, material, count, accessories and scale match the selected SKU?
  • Have added text, graphics, watermarks and misleading props been excluded?
  • Do the file sizes fit the upload route you are using?
  • Have you checked category rules and any separate promotional AI disclosure requirements?

If an image is rejected, record the actual reason before changing unrelated settings. Replacing an oversized file will not fix a misleading bundle, and changing backgrounds will not restore missing source detail. Address the stated issue, then inspect the complete listing again.

What to do next

Prepare one real-product main image and a complementary detail set before exporting a full catalog. Use the TikTok Shop product photo workflow to plan cleanup and sizing, then check the current US policy and Seller Center preview before publishing.

Keep TikTok listing and promotional requirements distinct.

A real product main image and supporting gallery for TikTok Shop US.

  1. Prepare the main

Start with the physical product’s front view on pure white and preserve accurate included contents.

  2. Check the route

Apply the listing shape and dimension rules separately from direct-upload or Media Center file limits.

  3. Review any AI

Read conditional AI accuracy guidance alongside the no-rendering rule and separate promotional disclosures.

Illustrative workflow. Review checkpoint: An AI label does not repair an inaccurate product or override gallery-image restrictions.
