HEIC photos for Etsy and Amazon: when and how to export JPEG in 2026

Check HEIC support for Etsy, Amazon, eBay and Shopify. Export JPEG copies on Apple devices, then review size, color, orientation and required image metadata.

You do not always need to convert an iPhone HEIC photo before listing it: current Etsy, eBay US and Shopify documentation includes HEIC, while Amazon's published product-image format list does not. Keep the original and export a separate JPEG when your destination or editing tool needs one; renaming the extension is not conversion.

Instructions and destination documentation were reviewed on October 21, 2026. Menu wording can vary with the device, operating-system version and sharing route. This guide describes documented options, not a test proving every HEIC variant works in every uploader.

Which destinations currently document HEIC support?

A marketplace accepting a format does not establish that every connected editor, browser or integration can decode it. Use the official page for the specific destination and inspect the error you actually receive.

Etsy listing photosDedicated image help lists HEIC; older troubleshooting lists only JPG, GIF and PNGTry the original where supported; a properly exported JPEG is a useful troubleshooting alternative
eBay US photo uploaderUS help explicitly lists HEIC among accepted formatsConversion is not universally required just because the source is from an iPhone

Sources are Etsy's dedicated image help, eBay US photo help, Shopify product-media help and Amazon's public image guide.

Etsy's older troubleshooting article has a narrower format list. That disagreement is a reason to test a JPEG copy when something fails, not to claim Etsy uniformly prohibits HEIC.

What does HEIC mean for a product-photo workflow?

Apple's HEIF and HEVC support article describes HEIF as an image format and HEVC as video coding. They are different media types. A photo-conversion instruction does not automatically apply to a product video.

A HEIC file can contain a perfectly useful source photograph even if a later app cannot read it. Keep that source rather than treating an upload failure as proof the photograph is damaged.

Choose a delivery format based on what you need to do next. A JPEG copy is a practical photographic interchange option for the destinations above. A PNG can suit workflows that need transparency, but a transparent file is not a ready white-background image for every marketplace.

The white background versus transparent PNG guide explains the output distinction. Format conversion and background editing solve separate problems.

How do you make a JPEG copy with Preview on a Mac?

Apple's Preview conversion guide gives a direct export path:

  1. Open the image in Preview.
  2. Choose File, then Export.
  3. Choose JPEG from the Format menu.
  4. Review the available quality options.
  5. Save with a new name or location so the original remains available.

Open the saved copy and confirm it is a JPEG, not simply a HEIC with a new suffix. Inspect the actual file you plan to upload.

Preview also documents selecting multiple files in the window's sidebar before exporting them. Test one representative file first so you can check the result before preparing a collection.

Exporting with Preview does not require sending the photograph to an unfamiliar web converter. Your existing cloud storage and sync settings are separate; a local export instruction is not a promise that your photo library has never synced anywhere.

How do you export from Photos on a Mac?

In Apple's Photos export guide, select the pictures and choose File, Export, then Export Photos. Choose JPEG in Photo Kind and review the size, quality and color-profile options before saving.

Use the selected-format export when you need a converted delivery file. Export Unmodified Original is a different command: it preserves the original format rather than promising a JPEG.

Keep the export large enough for the intended final crop. Avoid choosing a small convenience size and later enlarging it merely to reach a marketplace recommendation.

Photos also offers an IPTC-as-XMP sidecar option when exporting originals. A sidecar is separate from the image; do not assume a marketplace uploader reads it or that required metadata is embedded in the delivery JPEG.

After export, open the copy in another viewer if available. Check orientation, product colors, label text and file dimensions before sending it through another tool.

Can you convert while sharing from an iPhone?

Apple's current iPhone sharing guide says to open the photo, tap Share, then Options to adjust the file format. Automatic chooses for the destination; Current prevents format conversion; Most Compatible may convert files to JPEG or MOV.

The word “may” matters. This is a sharing option, not a guarantee that every app or route exports an identical JPEG. Inspect the file that arrives rather than assuming the setting alone proves the output format.

Choose a sharing destination you control and understand. Sending through an app that reduces dimensions can create a different problem from HEIC compatibility. Compare the received file with the original before using it as your new master.

The available information controls can differ across versions. Apple's separate location-metadata guide explains how to avoid sharing location where that is your choice. Handle location privacy separately from any source or AI metadata the destination requires.

How can you capture future photos as JPEG?

For compatible iPhone or iPad devices, Apple's support instructions say to open Settings, Camera, Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos then use JPEG; the setting also changes the supported video capture format.

This affects new captures. It does not convert the photographs already in your library. Use an export path for those.

High Efficiency is the alternative setting for HEIF and HEVC capture. Choose based on your storage and downstream workflow rather than assuming every marketplace needs the older format.

If your menus differ, use Apple's guide for your device and software version. Do not change unrelated camera options just to solve one uploader error.

Why does changing the extension not work?

A filename is a label; it does not rewrite the encoded image. Changing photo.heic to photo.jpg leaves the original contents unless an app actually decodes and exports the picture.

Use an editor's export or conversion command, then verify the result opens. If an upload still fails, record the exact error, pixel dimensions and byte size. The issue may be encoding, size, a browser limitation or another requirement.

Conversion also does not establish image quality. A small, blurred source remains limited after export. Adobe's resampling explanation distinguishes enlarging pixel dimensions from retaining source detail. Keep the best original and recapture when the evidence is absent.

Do not repeatedly save the only copy through different formats. Keep the original, one working version if needed and a clearly named final upload.

What should you check after conversion?

Check orientation first: a file that looked upright in your photo library may be interpreted differently later. Rotate in an editor if needed, export and verify the actual delivery copy.

Compare color with the source, especially warm metal, pale fabric and saturated packaging. Use an appropriate color-profile export and the destination's guidance; Etsy's troubleshooting page recommends sRGB.

Then check pixel dimensions, file size, crop and transparency. Shopify's current product-media page requires files smaller than 20MB; eBay US help gives a maximum of 12MB. Those are different limits, not a universal JPEG cap. Etsy's over-1MB wording concerns possible upload failure on slow connections, rather than a blanket file-size maximum.

The marketplace photo checker works locally after conversion and has its own limits: 10MB, 20 megapixels and a longest side no greater than 10,000 pixels. A tool's limit is distinct from a marketplace's requirement.

For a smaller upload, try the target-size compressor on a copy and inspect detail afterward. The compressor removes original metadata; use it only when no provider-required or destination-required provenance will be lost. Neither tool should be treated as a HEIC converter or a marketplace approval service.

Can conversion remove provenance or other metadata?

Do not assume all metadata survives every export or sharing route. Check the delivered file and retain the original when the source history matters.

Google's AI-generated image guidance says not to remove embedded AI-source metadata. A format-compatibility fix is not a reason to strip provider-required information.

C2PA's explainer describes Content Credentials as cryptographically bound provenance. It also explains that provenance metadata can be removed. An export that loses those credentials is not repaired simply by adding ordinary IPTC or XMP fields afterward.

The AI image metadata tagger can add supported AI-source fields. It does not recreate a lost signed C2PA manifest, validate an image's factual accuracy or certify compliance.

If you use a web conversion service, review its upload, retention and processing terms before sending unpublished product files. Do not infer privacy from the word “free.” A documented device export is often enough when you only need a JPEG copy.

What to do next

Export one representative image, keep the HEIC original and inspect the new file before converting a batch. Once you have a JPEG, PNG or WebP, the product photo background remover can prepare the real item for a listing; its guest path uploads the file for processing and does not accept HEIC directly.

Export a compatible copy while retaining the HEIC original.

An iPhone product photo moving to an uploader or editor with different format support.

  1. Check the destination

Read the actual destination and tool format requirements instead of assuming all HEIC files need conversion.

  2. Export a copy

Use a documented device export to make the required format while keeping the original source.

  3. Inspect the delivery

Check the delivered encoding, orientation, color, dimensions, crop and any required provenance.

Illustrative workflow. Review checkpoint: Changing a filename suffix does not convert the image or restore metadata lost during export.
