Fix Shadows After Background Removal

Background removal strips away the natural shadows that make products look grounded and three-dimensional. Without shadows, products appear to float against the white background — and buyers notice. This guide covers why it happens, the main shadow types, and how to restore realistic grounding.

Why Shadows Disappear

Background removal algorithms work by separating the foreground subject from the surrounding pixels. Shadows are part of the background — they sit on the surface behind and beneath the product — so they get removed along with everything else.

  • Natural shadows are blended into the original background and cannot be cleanly separated from it.
  • Even AI-powered removal tools treat shadow regions as background pixels by default.
  • The result is a product cutout with hard, clean edges but no visual grounding — it looks pasted onto the page.

Shadow Correction Workflow

There are three main shadow types used in ecommerce product photography, each serving a different visual purpose:

  • Contact shadow. A tight, dark shadow directly beneath the product where it touches the surface. This is the most important shadow for making products look grounded.
  • Drop shadow. A softer, offset shadow that simulates directional lighting. Adds depth and dimension, especially for products photographed from above.
  • Reflection shadow. A mirrored, faded copy of the product base. Common in electronics and luxury goods photography for a polished, editorial look.

For manual correction in Photoshop or GIMP, the typical workflow involves duplicating the product layer, applying a Gaussian blur, reducing opacity, and positioning the shadow layer beneath the subject. This works for single images but becomes impractical at scale.

A five-minute shadow QA pass

  1. Compare the product edge at 100% zoom; there should be no halo between the cutout and the shadow.
  2. Check that the shadow begins at the physical contact point instead of floating beside the product.
  3. Review the image at thumbnail size; the shadow should add depth without making the item look muddy.
  4. Check three representative products from the batch—light, dark, and reflective—before exporting the full set.
  5. Save the approved settings with the product-category preset so the next batch starts from the same standard.
